Tips for Success
Algebra has been described as the most powerful problem-solving tool ever invented. While arithmetic is used to solve specific problems such as 6 + 9 = 15, algebra is used to solve classes of problems such as x + y = 20. What makes algebra confusing at first is the use of variables such as x and y that can take on several if not infinitely many values. The power of algebra is that it can be used to solve abstract problems such as x + y = 20.
For many years you have been working with math concepts such as fractions, decimals, percents, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You hopefully are comfortable with these concepts because you have had years to practice them. Algebra is going to introduce you to concepts you have never heard of before and it takes time to develop competency with these new concepts. Don't give up if something seems difficult, you will understand with a little practice.
Come to class prepared and ready to learn. Pay close attention in class and take careful notes. New concepts are covered on a daily basis. Be diligent to consistently do the homework as it is assigned. This will give you the practice you need to master the new concepts. Expect to spend anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour on your algebra homework each day. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can get through algebra with little or no effort. Algebra is filled with so many new concepts that you will quickly get too far behind to catch up if you don't keep up with the class work and homework.
Do not be absent from class. Although it is sometimes necessary to be away from school, when you are absent from algebra or any other higher level math class you most certainly will miss one or more concepts. Even if you miss just one day this will effect your skills overall because each day's lesson builds upon concepts from previous days.
Don't leave class without understanding how to do your homework. If you don't understand a concept in class ask me to explain. If you still need some help come in right after school. I can usually explain it and send you on your way in a few minutes.
Take advantage of math tutoring. I will be available after school on certain days if you let me know you need help.
